If you had asked me at 10 years old what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would have told you that I wanted to be an engineer. Thankfully, I have changed since then, and life brought me other opportunities. It began with science, but it was living among different creatures at University that really captured my interest. After working with maple trees, gypsy moths and caribou, I found myself applying to vet school. I had considered returning to work with wildlife, but I was captivated by small animal medicine and surgery—so here I am!

Dr. Laura Kupers

BSc, DVM, CCRT

I graduated with Honours from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Science in 2010, and then completed my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College in 2014. After graduation, I jumped right into caring for small animals and pocket pets, which has been my passion ever since.

In 2019, I also became a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist (CCRT) through the Canine Rehabilitation Institute, adding another rewarding layer to my practice.

These days, I love working in small animal medicine, surgery, dentistry, acupuncture, and physiotherapy for pets of all kinds.

When I’m not in the clinic, I’m outdoors with family and friends — cycling, sailing, camping, hiking, skiing, or traveling somewhere new. My husband, daughters, our dog Gus, and I are always up for an adventure!

My very earliest memory is a Saturday morning at my parent’s house when I was three years old. Their Irish Setter, Emma, had whelped 13 puppies a few weeks earlier and my dad had built a room in the basement for her to raise them in. I got up early that morning and went down the stairs and over the board in the doorway that kept the puppies in. Emma was happy to share her new family with her people, and welcomed me into the room. I remember the curious little balls of fluff crawling all over me and licking at my face as I laughed like a fool. I learned early on how good it felt to make a true connection with an animal and that has stuck with me. As soon as I realized that there was a job where I could help people to foster that connection with their own animals, I knew that was what I wanted to do. Every day I get to help animals live happier lives and I get to see how that affects the people who love them. I think that is a pretty good way to spend my time! I graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2009, and I have a special interest in ultrasound imaging and dentistry.

Hospital Manager

Shortly after finishing university I worked at a therapeutic riding center for individuals with disabilities. I became more and more involved in the health care and management of our herd, and one day had the opportunity to see a minor surgery on one of the horses. At first, I didn’t think I would be able to watch, but I was unable to peel my eyes away! When I left this position, I started looking for other jobs that were animal-related.

I had always thought that the only way to work in a vet clinic was as the vet, and had no idea there were “nurses” in the clinic as well. Medicine interested me, but human medicine had no appeal – the more research I did, the more I realized that being a vet tech was the perfect fit for me. I wanted to be involved with the care of animals and work to make their lives better each day.

I went back to school for the Veterinary Technician Program in 2011, and did one of my co-ops at our sister clinic Caledon Mountain Veterinary Hospital. I thought that when I graduated I would naturally head back into the horse world, but I loved working with dogs and cats and never left!

Growing up with a Veterinary Technician mom, I was always surrounded by animals, and from a young age, I knew this was the path for me. In 2022, I graduated from Seneca College with a diploma in Veterinary Technology, where I gained a solid foundation in animal care—and discovered just how much I love helping pets thrive.

I have a soft spot for senior pets and enjoy working with older animals to ensure they have the best quality of life. I also use fear-free techniques to make every visit as stress-free as possible for pets and their owners, creating a positive experience for everyone involved. Emergency and critical care are areas I feel especially passionate about, and I find it incredibly rewarding to support families through tough situations.

When I’m not at work, I’m spending time with my own little zoo - two dogs (Maggie and Sydney) and a cat (Bean). I love being outdoors, whether it’s camping, paddle-boarding, or curling up with a good book in my hammock. Music is another big part of my life, and I enjoy playing the piano and violin whenever I get the chance.

I have always found a way to connect with all kinds of animals, and they have always brought me so much peace and healing that I wanted to be able to give them the same in return. My love of horses, such powerful (and sassy) creatures, opened that door for me. Building bonds with horses, especially rescue horses, helped me learn how to build trust and respect “the nature of the beast.”

Once my family got our first dog, a Golden Retriever named Sophie, I fell in love with the furry, four-legged friends I now work with today. The veterinary field is a world I plan to inhabit for many years to come, and I’m so proud to be an RVT and 2016 Seneca College graduate!

I always knew I loved animals from a young age and I was thrilled when, after years of bugging, my parents got a me a dog. He was a little Sheltie named Jasper and we did everything together for the next 11 years. When he was about nine I noticed a change in him, and a trip to the vet diagnosed him with diabetes. I learned how to give insulin, take glucose curves and for the next two years was his sole caregiver. It broke my heart to have to say goodbye to him after 11 years, but the love and happiness he gave me over that lifetime was what bonded me to the animal industry. I volunteered and then eventually took a job with the veterinarian who cared for Jasper during his illness, and I have been in love with being a veterinary assistant ever since.
